It’s been a truly eye-opening experience for me since I’ve been interviewing for a new job. Granted, I should know what to expect more than the average person, since I’m in the business of IT consulting services and staffing; it’s just that when you think you’ve seen almost everything, you get surprised again and again.
Being with the same company for over 10 years, and although knowing how to interview, I was rusty. I won’t get into the details of how to market yourself, networking amongst colleagues, what to do or not do – there is so much information out there, you can find those answers fairly quickly. What I’m talking about is self-confidence and knowing what you bring to the table. Having faith in your abilities, even when ‘headhunters’ may tell you something different, makes a big difference in how you come across in an interview.
I’ve also learned that being yourself is key. Sounds simple, but usually forgotten. Sitting in front of a CEO can make one nervous (it has for me!); however, if you think to yourself “What if I had nothing to lose…” - how would you handle yourself then? That’s the time where the real you comes out.
Lastly, not enough people do their homework. Learn more about how you can add value to an organization; what that organization can offer you; how they have competed against their peers – growth, reputation, etc.; what you can expect in terms of a total package (salary is just a part of the whole); management structure; company philosophy…
Good luck on your ‘hunt’,
Aurelio
